Tissue expanders are commonly used as the first stage of implant-based breast reconstruction following mastectomy. A temporary expander is placed beneath the skin and muscle to gradually stretch the tissue, creating space for a permanent breast implant.
Over several weeks or months, the expander is slowly filled to achieve the desired size and shape. Once the expansion process is complete, the expander is replaced with a permanent implant, allowing for controlled healing and predictable aesthetic results.
